Open Server For Mac

Safari User Guide

If you can’t open a website, try these suggestions.

MAMP Server creates a local server environment, especially for the Mac OS. The pack includes Apache Web Server, MySQL, and PHP. In one click, the MAMP package installs tools required to create a PHP local server on Mac. MAMP provides an excellent platform for developers to test and host their applications. Choose Go→Connect to Server from the Finder. Open the Connect to Server dialog. The Connect to Server dialog opens. In the Address box, enter smb://. Click the radio button 'Use the following DNS server addresses:' and type in OpenDNS addresses, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fields. Click the OK button, then the Close button, and the Close button. Any Mac OS X Server installation can serve as an Open Directory Master, though you will want to use a machine that is sufficiently powered to handle directory service requests. If you're looking for open source or free database software for the Mac it's a good idea to get your database developer and administrator involved. A basic knowledge of database query languages may be needed to get the most from your Mac database tool.

  1. In the Safari app on your Mac, check the message that appears when a page fails to open.

It may suggest ways to solve the problem or include information you need to solve it.

  2. Make sure you’re using the correct address for the webpage.

If you copied and pasted the address, make sure it doesn’t have extra characters or missing characters at the beginning or end.

  3. If the website requires a VPN connection, make sure it’s functioning properly.

See Connect your Mac to a VPN.

  4. Try entering /index.html or /index.htm at the end of the address.

  5. Choose View > Reload Page.

If the page still won’t open, quit Safari, reopen it, then try again.

  6. Try again at a different time.

The website server may be busy, or the website may be unavailable temporarily.

  7. Contact your network administrator for help.

If you connect to the internet using a corporate or enterprise network, the network may have a firewall that prevents you from opening the webpage.

  8. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall, you may need to specify proxy servers to access some internet sites.

See Set up a proxy server using Safari.

  9. Contact the website’s owner to find out if the web server has a problem, or if the website is incompatible with Safari.

For example, Safari can’t open a website that uses a protocol other than http or https.

  10. Choose Apple menu > App Store, then click Updates.

Use the latest version of Safari. See Keep your Mac up to date.

  11. Click and hold the Reload button , then choose Reload Without Content Blockers.

The page might be blocked by a Content Blocker you have installed.

Great guide, thanks John.

Just a note, in case anyone has the same issue. At first I couldn't get this to work. I tried logging out and back in (still no joy), then restarting the mac (still no joy).

Try doing both of those first. However, if, like me, you still can't get the local host site to load, try the following: You should find a file at /Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html.en . This contains the text 'It works!' referred to in the post. What I did was duplicate that file in the same folder and changed the duplicate's name to 'index.html', leaving the original in situ.

Both local and user sites then loaded. After which, I was able to delete the duplicated file and everything now works without issue. Just to be clear, leave the original file index.html.en where it is, untouched and unharmed throughout this step.

Not sure why I had to take this mysterious detour - probably something local to my machine, but if you're having trouble after following the guide above, see if it helps.
